Bachelor of Arts in General Music Studies with Kodály Emphasis

 

I. AIM OF THE STUDY

 - to train musicians  who, upon successful completion of their coursework, will possess a comprehensive knowledge of Music Theory, Solfege (Musicianship), Music History and Choral Conducting and who will be qualified to pursue graduate studies in Music Pedagogy as well as in Musicology, Music Theory, Choral Conducting and Church Music.

II. PREREQUISITES FOR ENROLMENT

Successful entrance examination.

Competencies evaluated in entrance examination are

 - musical hearing: high level competency in musical hearing and sight reading;
 - Classical harmony: basic knowledge of Music History, Literature and Classical Harmony;  
 - folk music: acquaintance with folk song analysis;  
 - piano skills: intermediate level;  
 - vocal skills: accurate and expressive singing.

III. GENERAL INFORMATION

1. All courses and lectures will be held in English!

2. Length of the training: 6 semesters

3. Application deadline: 15 February of each year
 
4. Applicants must fill in an application form and send it accompanied by the following documents:

  • Detailed professional curriculum vitae
  • Photocopy of highest school certificate(s)/degree(s)
  • Four passport size photos
  • Copy of TOEFL exam certificate or its equivalent
  • Registration fee to be paid before the entrance examination (60 EUR)

The application form will be available on the homepage of the Institute.

5. Entrance examination date is announced by 1st March each year.

The entrance examination date for the 2012/2013 academic year MA and BA courses is 4-5-6th June, 2012.

Notification of acceptance will be sent out no later than August 1 of each year. 

IV. ENTRANCE EXAMINATION

The entrance examination consists of two parts (written and oral). The maximum score is 200 points in total.

Music Theory - written: 30 points
Music Theory - oral: 30 points
Solfege - written: 30 points
Solfege - oral: 30 points
Piano: 30 points
Singing: 30 points
Folk Music (oral exam): 20 points

Written Examination (dictation):
an excerpt from an art song (chosen from the Classical or Romantic period): notation of the soprano and bass parts
a 20-21th century monophonic melody
triads and seventh chords (and/or their inversions)

Oral examination:
sight-singing of a simple Classical art song
sight-singing of an atonal melody

Singing
a Baroque or Classical art song or aria
a folk song or folk song arrangement

Piano
The candidate should prepare one piece from each of the following three categories:
- piece by J. S. Bach (at least on the level of the two-part inventions)
- first movement of a Classical sonata (J. Haydn or W. A. Mozart)
- a piece written by a 19th or 20th century composer
